Avamere at Sandy, an assisted living and memory care community in Sandy, Oregon, has some talented residents. One of the assisted living residents, Wally Hewitt, is an artistic wood carver. He regularly crafts wood carvings as a hobby in the community.
Last year, he sold many of his masterpieces to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Recently, Director of Sales and Outreach Susan Leininger went to Wally with a request about a month before Easter to see if he could create a cross for the Avamere at Sandy community to decorate for Easter.
Wally created a cross that stands about 2 feet high. He hand-chiseled the cross, then painted the vines and drilled 2-inch holes throughout the cross to hold flowers. Resident Jennie Weber participated in flowering the cross the Thursday before Easter. Other residents also helped in flowering the cross.
Before flowering the cross, some of our residents were treated to an Easter message by volunteer Pastor Tom Morrison, who shared his Easter message on YouTube for the community. It was a special time.
