Have you seen the gorgeous giant pink and purple saucer magnolias in bloom? Did you know that you can make your own magnolia syrup with the flowers?! Our Executive Director Maddie made some magnolia syrup for our happy hour drinks this Friday! Our residents enjoyed a Magnolia Mule.
Magnolia flowers have been around since the Crustaceous age and were a favorite food of many plant eating dinosaurs. Every time you eat a magnolia flower, you’re sharing a meal with a dinosaur!
Try Maddie’s magnolia syrup recipe and Gilly’s Magnolia Mule recipe to make your own drinks!
Magnolia Syrup:
Combine one cup sugar and one cup water.
Bring the water and sugar to a boil and add one cup of magnolia flower petals (make sure to remove the stems, as they are bitter!)
Simmer for 20 minutes with the petals, sugar and water.
Strain the syrup into an airtight container.
Magnolia syrup can be stored for up to one year.
